Student | Sports Journalist | Digital Media Playmaker
My name is Jourdan Kerl . I am a graduating senior at the Prairie View A&M University located in Prairie View, Texas, and I am graduating in May 2017.
Entering my final year at PVAMU, many doors have opened that I could have never imagined. Currently, I serve as the News Editor for The Panther student newspaper, radio co-host for “The Fifth Quarter” ONLY ON PVU-Kno student radio station, sports anchor for the PVTX Campus News Team, and student intern for the Open Mic Broadcast Network. There has never been a greater feeling than being in my passion. Listen to my radio work here. More clips of my work will be updated very soon.
During the summer of 2015, I interned at KCOH 1230 AM in the heart of Houston, Texas. While at KCOH, I was able to deliver sports reports every week as a part of the daily sports program “Sports Rap” with award-winning sports journalist Ralph Cooper. To hear some of my sports clips from the show, click here. The topics that I discussed on the sports program ranged from my predictions on the 2015 NBA Finals to analyzing Serena Williams’ journey to her second career “Serena Slam” to the story of former MLB professional baseball player Darryl Hamilton. In addition to my work on the sports program, I was also heavily involved in all social media and digital media aspects of the station. Beginning in early July, I was able to design many of the promotional cards for the station’s weekday shows as well as for the guest shows of the station; many of those graphics can be found here. In addition to all of that, I managed to update the website for the station daily and to interact with KCOH Listeners through the Twitter and Facebook pages.
In the fall of 2013, I began my work with Panthervision, a web broadcast produced by the athletic department at Prairie View to show all of the home PVAMU games. As a former volleyball player, I was brought into the team to deliver play-by-play commentary for all of the women’s volleyball home athletic games. During the 2013 football season, the sports information department (SID) allowed me to do color analysis for all home games. For basketball seasons, I have been able to host a halftime news break with a co-host for women’s basketball games. These halftime shows have included a first-half recap, player highlights, and a second-half preview. I have also written several PVAMU athletics’ stories, filled with player interviews, stats, and highlights, for the volleyball, soccer, and the women’s basketball teams. The assistant sports information director once said that “Jourdan has a knack for writing in sports” with no formal AP style training. For the athletic compliance department, I have created flyers for many of the PVAMU home games. Many of these can be found here.
Sports broadcasting is my passion, and I would love to take this passion and my experience in the field to continue to tell these stories in the professional sports industry through a local television station or as a beat reporter.
Being born and raised in the Home of America’s Team, I love Dallas, Texas, all things Dallas sports, and the State Fair of Texas. Outside of my passion of sports journalism, I enjoy attending and watching all sporting events, cooking from the Food Network, line dancing, and spending time with my family and friends.
I am a proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
